No, when you grow up, your heart doesn’t die

John Hughes was much more than a writer, producer and director–much more. He was also a good person. In 1985 a young girl watched The Breakfast Club and finally felt understood. So she picked up a pen and wrote him a fan letter, pouring out her heart to him about the feelings of connectedness he had instilled. In return she received a fan club welcome kit.

Unwilling to allow her feelings to be brushed aside by a form letter, she wrote him again. He responded personally and they began a two year correspondance that had more resonance than she ever imagined. Here she tells her story and eulogizes John in one of the most touching articles I’ve read in a long time. It’s worth every minute of the read, but have some tissue handy. Thanks to Mae for passing it along (John Hughes is another thing she doesn’t hate). You owe me some Kleenex!
